ASU Baseball's fall session is here, so let's take a look around the diamond at the players that will be on the roster under new head coach and Sun Devil for Life, Willie Bloomquist. Our first look is at Adam Tulloch, the starter for Saturday's 16 innings of fall ball against the Dirtbags of Long Beach State.
Another new face in Maroon and Gold for 2020 is Freshman Bryce Barnett.
Sun Devil Baseball is back and fans of the program were treated today to our 1st look at last year's national Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Tyler Thornton.
Sophomore starter RJ Dabovich gave the Sun Devils exactly what they needed on Saturday, 6.2 strong innings of work and win 1 of the 4 needed for the Devils to advance to the Super-Regional.
The 6' 5" sophomore from Mesa finished the regular season strong with a a team low 2.25 ERA in his final 3 games and a 22/4 K/BB ratio. In his last outing against third-ranked Stanford, Vander Kooi posted a career high 11 strikeouts in 7.0 scoreless innings and is set up for a good run in the post-season.
In what may have been his audition for a starting role in the post-season and for next season, Brady Corrigan held the potent Stanford offense scoreless through 4 innings on Saturday. He surrendered a solo home run in the 5th inning before leaving with 2 out and 2 on in the 6th.
#SunDevil4Life Merrill Kelly now pitches for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball. Kelly pitched for the Sun Devils in 2010 and was subsequently drafted by Tampa Bay in the 8th round. Merrill is shown here pitching against the New York Yankees on 1 May, 2019. Kelly dominated the Yankees going 5.1 strong innings for the win.
Just a few days after the 3rd anniversary of the 9th no-hitter in Sun Devil Baseball history, Ryan Hingst thrilled the crowd at Phoenix Municipal Stadium with the 10th. It was an absolutely brilliant outing! Hingst allowed only 4 baserunners all night, retired the side in order in 6 of the 9 innings, and faced the minimum in another thanks to a double play.
The closest Utah got to a threat was in the 6th inning when a walk, sac bunt, and another walk put runners on 1st & 2nd with 1 out. Hingst rose to the occasion with a strikeout and fly out to end the inning. This was the only time in the game that Utah had 2 baserunners in an inning, and the only time they had a runner reach 2nd base.
The 5-0 final came on this night, 3 years ago.
