Sun Devil 4 Life, Kole Calhoun, announced his retirement from MLB on Friday night after 12 seasons. In his time at ASU, Kole became know as "The Mayor of Omaha", due to his performance at the College World Series in 2009 where he was named to the all-tournament team. Congratulations on an amazing career Kole Calhoun!
It is appropriate that we re-launch this site and its corresponding social media presence with an image of our favorite Sun Devil, Jacob Tobias, who kicked-off the 2024 season leading ASU's powerful offense. In 16 plate appearances against Santa Clara during the opening weekend, Tobi had 7 hits including 2 HR and reached-base 9 times for an OPS of 1.563.
This YouTube video shows every hit that Spencer Torkelson got during the Sun Devil's appearance in the 2019 NCAA tournament regionals. Oh what could have been in 2020.
Another Sun Devil that will be on the Detroit Tigers Major League Roster very soon is Gage Workman. According to Mike Axisa of CBSSports.com, the Tigers "...flat out store Arizona State infielder Gage Workman in the fourth round." contributing to the Tigers' outstanding draft. Detroit's gain is our loss. Thank you for the outstanding years at ASU Gage, we look forward to seeing you on TV in a Tigers uniform soon.
Opening day has finally arrived for Sun Devil Baseball so it makes sense that we should take a quick look back at a previous Valentine's Day. It was on this date in 2004 that Dustin Pedroia (pictured here with the Red Sox) led the #7 Sun Devils to an 11-0 drubbing of Utah.
Brian Serven played 3 seasons as the Sun Devil's primary catcher and was a run-producing machine. Serven was selected in the 5th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. In 2019, he got a non-roster invitation to spring training with the Rockies and hit 9 HR in 77 games for AA Hartford. We look forward to adding him to the list of Sun Devils in MLB in the near future.
Hauver emerged as a key component of the young 2018 Sun Devils team, becoming one of 6 Freshman to start more than 20 games for ASU Baseball that year. The young outfielder is back in 2019 and is again a critical piece of this squad, starting all 23 games thusfar and slashing .379/.496/.667.
In the quest for their 6th national championship, no-one has been more of a cornerstone to the Sun Devils, both on offense and defense, than Gage Workman. Workman is slashing .360/.400/.420 with 9 RBIs during ASU's perfect 12 game start to the 2019 season.
Ten years ago today, Mike Leake took a no-hitter into the 8th inning, eventually turning in a 1-hit shutout masterpiece against #15 Missouri. Leake was far more to the Sun Devils than just a pitcher however. A few days earlier, he contributed mightily with his bat in leading the Sun Devils in their crushing of the U of A 23-9.
The 2018 PAC-12 Freshman of the Year and 2019 Pre-Season All-American started the season right by being named PAC-12 Player of the Week for the first week of the season. We'll be seeing many more photos of this guy on this blog in the coming weeks and years.
Hunter Bishop had himself a Sun Devil of an opening weekend to kick-off his Junior season. In the 3 games against the Irish, Bishop hit .571 (8 for 14) with 3 doubles, a HR, 5 RBI and 7 runs scored. His slugging percentage of 1.000 leads the team, as does his 1.625 OPS.
