ASU Baseball's fall session is here, so let's take a look around the diamond at the players that will be on the roster under new head coach and Sun Devil for Life, Willie Bloomquist. Our first look is at Adam Tulloch, the starter for Saturday's 16 innings of fall ball against the Dirtbags of Long Beach State.
Though Sun Devils everywhere are crushed that we won't get to see what you could have accomplished at this level in 2020, we are excited to see what you do at the next level. To all of the members of the 2020 ASU MLB draft class, we wish you the very best. Give 'em Hell, Devils!
Boyd Vander Kooi had an amazing outing last night for the Sun Devils, going 7 strong innings for the win. Boyd came on in the 3rd inning with the bases-loaded and no outs against the Boston College Eagles. The Junior right-hander limited the damage in the 3rd to just 1 run, then completed the game giving up just 1 run on 5 hits and 0 walks. Vander Kooi is pictured here from his Sophomore season.
Sun Devil Baseball is back and fans of the program were treated today to our 1st look at last year's national Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Tyler Thornton.
Sun Devil Baseball's all-time saves leader, Ryan Burr, shared a video on Twitter of his recovery from Tommy John surgery and subsequent non-tender by the Chicago White Sox.
Ryan Burr, ASU Baseball's all-time saves leader, underwent Tommy John surgery last week and is unlikely to return to the White Sox before the middle of the 2020 season. Burr was lights-out at home during the 2019 season, posting a 2.57 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 7 innings out of the bullpen at Guaranteed Rate Field.
One of the most underrated Sun Devils of the 2019 season was second-baseman Drew Swift. From the 9-hole in the batting order, Swift was often found kicking-off late inning rallys. In the Devils final game of 2019, during the Baton Rouge Regional, Swift went 1-2 with 3 walks and several stellar defensive plays.
The 6' 5" sophomore from Mesa finished the regular season strong with a a team low 2.25 ERA in his final 3 games and a 22/4 K/BB ratio. In his last outing against third-ranked Stanford, Vander Kooi posted a career high 11 strikeouts in 7.0 scoreless innings and is set up for a good run in the post-season.
In what may have been his audition for a starting role in the post-season and for next season, Brady Corrigan held the potent Stanford offense scoreless through 4 innings on Saturday. He surrendered a solo home run in the 5th inning before leaving with 2 out and 2 on in the 6th.
#SunDevil4Life Merrill Kelly now pitches for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball. Kelly pitched for the Sun Devils in 2010 and was subsequently drafted by Tampa Bay in the 8th round. Merrill is shown here pitching against the New York Yankees on 1 May, 2019. Kelly dominated the Yankees going 5.1 strong innings for the win.
Just a few days after the 3rd anniversary of the 9th no-hitter in Sun Devil Baseball history, Ryan Hingst thrilled the crowd at Phoenix Municipal Stadium with the 10th. It was an absolutely brilliant outing! Hingst allowed only 4 baserunners all night, retired the side in order in 6 of the 9 innings, and faced the minimum in another thanks to a double play.
The closest Utah got to a threat was in the 6th inning when a walk, sac bunt, and another walk put runners on 1st & 2nd with 1 out. Hingst rose to the occasion with a strikeout and fly out to end the inning. This was the only time in the game that Utah had 2 baserunners in an inning, and the only time they had a runner reach 2nd base.
On this date 6 years ago, Ryan Kellogg no-hit 3rd-Ranked Oregon State. The no-hitter was the 9th in Sun Devil Baseball history, but the 1st to come against a PAC-10/12 opponent, and only the 2nd on the road. Ryan is currently in the Chicago Cubs organization.
With the Sun Devils blowing teams out by double-digits on a regular basis, Save chances may be few and far between. It looks like when the do come, at least for now, they will go to the freshman left-hander.
In the first photo of our starting pitcher series, we look at our Sunday starter, RJ Dabovich. In his 2 starts thus far in the 2019 season, RJ Dabovich has earned his 2-0 record. His start today against UC Davis was his best as a Sun Devil, going 7 innings and giving up only 1 run on 4 hits. The Devils beat-up on the Aggies 17-2 to sweep the 3-game series.
Sun Devil shortstop Deven Marrero throws on the run to first baseman Zach Wilson to close-out the 2011 Pac-10 Baseball regular season at Packard Stadium.
With his 3 doubles and 3 RBI on Wednesday night, Drew Swift is now hitting .400 (6 for 15) with 4 doubles and 6 RBI in the Sun Devils 4 games to this point in the 2019 season.
I love this photo, taken early in the 2018 season. The 2018 Devils may not have been as talented as some of the teams we've been spoiled with over the years, but they made up for any deficiencies with their heart and hustle. They were flat-out fun to watch!
