Boyd Vander Kooi had an amazing outing last night for the Sun Devils, going 7 strong innings for the win. Boyd came on in the 3rd inning with the bases-loaded and no outs against the Boston College Eagles. The Junior right-hander limited the damage in the 3rd to just 1 run, then completed the game giving up just 1 run on 5 hits and 0 walks. Vander Kooi is pictured here from his Sophomore season.
Sophomore starter RJ Dabovich gave the Sun Devils exactly what they needed on Saturday, 6.2 strong innings of work and win 1 of the 4 needed for the Devils to advance to the Super-Regional.
The 6' 5" sophomore from Mesa finished the regular season strong with a a team low 2.25 ERA in his final 3 games and a 22/4 K/BB ratio. In his last outing against third-ranked Stanford, Vander Kooi posted a career high 11 strikeouts in 7.0 scoreless innings and is set up for a good run in the post-season.
In what may have been his audition for a starting role in the post-season and for next season, Brady Corrigan held the potent Stanford offense scoreless through 4 innings on Saturday. He surrendered a solo home run in the 5th inning before leaving with 2 out and 2 on in the 6th.
#SunDevil4Life Merrill Kelly now pitches for the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball. Kelly pitched for the Sun Devils in 2010 and was subsequently drafted by Tampa Bay in the 8th round. Merrill is shown here pitching against the New York Yankees on 1 May, 2019. Kelly dominated the Yankees going 5.1 strong innings for the win.
Hauver emerged as a key component of the young 2018 Sun Devils team, becoming one of 6 Freshman to start more than 20 games for ASU Baseball that year. The young outfielder is back in 2019 and is again a critical piece of this squad, starting all 23 games thusfar and slashing .379/.496/.667.
In the quest for their 6th national championship, no-one has been more of a cornerstone to the Sun Devils, both on offense and defense, than Gage Workman. Workman is slashing .360/.400/.420 with 9 RBIs during ASU's perfect 12 game start to the 2019 season.
Starting his 3rd season as one of he keys to the Sun Devil bullpen, Chaz Montoya has already appeared in 5 of the 8 games the team has played.
With the Sun Devils blowing teams out by double-digits on a regular basis, Save chances may be few and far between. It looks like when the do come, at least for now, they will go to the freshman left-hander.
In the first photo of our starting pitcher series, we look at our Sunday starter, RJ Dabovich. In his 2 starts thus far in the 2019 season, RJ Dabovich has earned his 2-0 record. His start today against UC Davis was his best as a Sun Devil, going 7 innings and giving up only 1 run on 4 hits. The Devils beat-up on the Aggies 17-2 to sweep the 3-game series.
With his 3 doubles and 3 RBI on Wednesday night, Drew Swift is now hitting .400 (6 for 15) with 4 doubles and 6 RBI in the Sun Devils 4 games to this point in the 2019 season.
The 2018 PAC-12 Freshman of the Year and 2019 Pre-Season All-American started the season right by being named PAC-12 Player of the Week for the first week of the season. We'll be seeing many more photos of this guy on this blog in the coming weeks and years.
Hunter Bishop had himself a Sun Devil of an opening weekend to kick-off his Junior season. In the 3 games against the Irish, Bishop hit .571 (8 for 14) with 3 doubles, a HR, 5 RBI and 7 runs scored. His slugging percentage of 1.000 leads the team, as does his 1.625 OPS.
